With many Brits planning on taking an exciting winter sports
holiday in the coming months, experts are urging people to remember the
importance of winter sports insurance, stating that
without this valuable protective cover winter holidaymakers could face
costs of thousands of pounds in the event that they are injured. Winter
sports holiday carry a much higher risk of injury, and therefore
participants needs to make sure that they have adequate
travel insurance.
According to recent figures over one and a quarter million Brits will
head off on a skiing or winter sports holiday in the 2007/2008 season, and
of these around twenty thousand are likely to suffer an injury as a result
of the sports that they are participating in. In the 2006/1007 season
around one in every fifty winter sports participants suffered an injury
according to French mountain doctors.
According to the insurance group Esure about a quarter of Brits that
head off on a winter sports holiday fail to take out insurance to protect
themselves. It is thought that many of those that go on this type of
holiday are under the impression that their standard travel insurance
covers them, but this is not the case. Winter sports holiday are a far
higher risk for insurers and therefore specialist cover is required to
protect both the participant and the equipment.
One spokesperson from the Association of British Insurers stated: 'You
might have an annual policy from your summer holiday or from your bank, so
check if it covers winter sports.' Experts state that it is important to
check whether you are covered for winter sports, and if not to take out
separate cover or in some cases have it added on to any existing cover
that you may have in place. Another consideration would be to make sure
that your
life insurance policy covers you for such sports before you go. Also,
if you plan to tour the area where you will be based by car then check
that your hire car has fully comprehensive
car insurance
cover.
